Castell Gronw is a motte and mutilated bailey which lies within a private garden overlooking the River Dee as it leaves Bala Lake, and can be seen from the public footpath leading to the narrow-gauge tourist railway nearby. It is likely to have been a commotal centre of Penllyn uwch Tryweryn, and to date to the late 12th century. It was most likely abandoned by Roger Mortimer, who ordered the creation of the motte and planned town of Bala in the early 14th century.
