Castell Dinas Bran is a spectacularly sited stone castle built for the princes of Powys on top of an old hillfort overlooking the Dee valley. The castle is free to access, and there is a well maintained path to reach it, although it is a bit of a climb. The views from the site are spectacular, and the ruin is very picturesque, with parts of the hall, courtyard wall, gatehouse and old keep surviving to a height of a few metres in places. It was captured from the Welsh in 1277 and never brought back into use afterwards.
