Castell Bolan is a ditched motte on top of a prominent ridge which overlooks an east-flowing tributary of the River Afan north of Port Talbot. It is also sited on the north-facing slopes of Mynydd Dinas, and mirroring Castell Bolan to the west is Plas Baglan, which was the seat of the Welsh lords of Afan. A third defensive site on the east side of the Afan is Pen-y-Castle, which is a modest hillfort, probably pre-medieval. Castell Bolan is covered by woodland and only accessible over fields used for agriculture, so permission should be gained to access it.
