Castell Aber Ia is one of those castles that is the subject of a vast amount of speculation. It was mentioned once by Gerald of Wales, and was called Deudraeth (two beaches) in that reference. Within the tourist attraction of Portmeirion, what remains is a rocky platform crowned by a gazebo wall upon a site that supposedly had a small D-shaped tower on the summit. It is a prominent location which is similar to those other early castles mentioned by Gerald, but really the location is conjectural, selected in the absence of anything better.
