Carreghofa Castle is a small ditched enclosure on top of a gully which drains into the River Tanat. Part of the site has been eroded away, leaving only an L-shaped ditch, but it is clear that the enclosed area was modest from the word go. The castle is first mentioned at the start of the 12th century, refortified at the end of the century, and last mentioned towards the end of King John’s reign. It may have been a garrisoned fort built to administer and protect the silver mining operation nearby. The fields around it ae used for agriculture, so permission should be sought to access the site.
