Carndochan Castle is an impressively sited castle built by the Princes of Gwynedd in the 12th or early 13th century. The ruins of the walls, and three towers can clearly be seen, and there are spectacular views – although it is a stiff walk to the top of the hill. Best preserved is the base of a D-shaped tower-keep, typical of the princes at this period. The site was excavated about 8 years ago, and revealed a more complex and interesting castle than expected, including the previously unknown gateway.
