Cardigan Castle is a ruined courtyard castle founded in the 12th century by the Lord Rhys of Deheubarth as the chief seat of his realm. It was here that the first national eisteddfod was held by him. Much of the castle was strengthened and rebuilt between 1244-54. It remained in use for about a century after this, but was allowed to fall into ruin, and was then part demolished in the 17th century. It remained in private hands and fell into significant disrepair in the 2oth century, but a massive project has brought it back into use as a museum and garden.
