Candleston Castle is a ruined 14th century manor house which sits near a public car park in Merthyr Mawr Nature Reserve. Hidden below the (now wooded) sand dunes is a substantial estate of the Cantilupe family who built the castle, which was swallowed up by the sand over time, although the manor remained occupied to the 19th century, when it was abandoned. At the time I visited the car park had to be paid for but otherwise access was free.
