Camlais Castle is to initial appearance a large and isolated ditched motte with an external counterscarp bank. However excavations have revealed that the mound hides the remains of an impressive round keep of the 13th century. The history of the site is scant, and the question of who built it is a matter of scholarly debate. It is accessible on foot through the fields which are open to the road and used for sheep grazing.
