Callendar House is a large country house managed by the local authority and administered by the Falkirk Community Trust. At the core of the house is a small tower which may date back to the 15th century. This was not built by the family of Callendar, who had been dispossessed by David II, but the Livingstons.

By the end of the 16th century, the Livngston family had turned the old tower into a far larger one, with a mansion block to the south and associated courtyard. James Livingston, Earl of Callendar, had his estates confiscated during the civil wars of the 17th century, but returned at the Restoration, when remodelling of the house was once again undertaken. Eventually, the husband of the last of the Livingstons was executed in 1745 for his Jacobite actions, and although their son was allowed to live at the house until his death in 1778, the house was then auctioned off and remodelled again to its current form.
