Caerphilly Castle is a massive 13th century castle built for the Earl of Gloucester when he decided to annex a large part of the Welsh-held lands of Upper Glamorgan. Construction included the creation of substantial water defences with a dam, and the central part of the castle is an island within this consisting of concentric defences. The inner courtyard has twin gatehouses and four corner towers, and was much repaired in the 19th century. It is justifiably famous, and is a Cadw property.
