Caerleon Castle is a large and impressive motte, which has been landscaped in more recent years and is now within private gardens and overgrown by trees. The bailey – which there is now no trace of – occupied a quadrangular area which overlies the Roman defences of the town. It was built early in the 13th century and is believed to have had a shell keep on the summit. There may have been defences leading to the river crossing, as a medieval tower survives here.
