Builth Castle is a substantial and impressive set of earthworks surviving from the 13th century castle as strengthened for Edward I. It was founded c1090 and had a violent history. At its peak it had a stone keep surrounded by a shell keep on top of the large ditched motte, and a bailey fortified in stone. It was robbed of all its stone in the 16th century, and a regular platform on the east side may be a civil war gun platform. It is free to access, but not well signposted.
