Broughty Castle is an impressive tower house dating back to the 15th century on the banks of the Firth of Tay east of Dundee. Built by the then Lord Gray, it suffered part demolition in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was refurbished by the War Office in the mid 19th century and is now run as a museum by Dundee City Council.

The massive tower was originally rectangular and entered at ground floor level, and it was provided with a courtyard wall and at least three round towers – we might look at Threave Castle to get an indication as to its appearance. The gate was a simple arched gateway. This building, always intended to reflect artillery usage, was supposed to provide defence against English naval activity in the Tay, and it is as an artillery fortress that it must be seen. The tower was a shell when refurbished in the 19th century, and the works included the addition of a wing as well as significant artillery outworks.
