Abergavenny is a much ruined castle dating from the 11th and 12th century and rebuilt in stone on a grander scale. Most famously it was occupied by the de Braose family and was the scene of a massacre of 70 Welsh guests in 1175. It was occupied until the 16th century, was abandoned after the Civil War and now houses a museum within a 19th century mock keep on the motte.
