Aberdour Castle is the extensive ruins of a castle dating from the 12th to the 18th century. Frequently touted as the oldest stone castle in Scotland, the old keep actually dates to the 14th century, and most of what remains is 16th century or later.
The castle belonged to the Douglas family for most of its active life, and was damaged in the Jacobite Rising of 1715, by which time it was primarily an extensive mansion. It is now managed by HES and open to the public.Become a supporter of my work to access a more detailed history
