The Abbot’s Tower is a privately owned and occupied tower house dating to the 16th century. It sits on the south-eastern end of a hill and looks out over the confluence of the New Abbey Pow with the estuary of the River Nith.
The lands were held by Sweetheart Abbey, and leased by the Broun family, relatives of the Brouns of Carsluith. Soon after a Broun became abbot of Sweetheart, the lands were alienated, and the tower was then built. By 1790 it had been abandoned in favour of a new built farm. The tower was purchased in 1989, and restored for occupation. It is not open to the public.Become a supporter of my work to access a more detailed history
